von Pietro Giovanni Liuzzi (Autor)
Based on the evidence of survivors and eye-witnesses, Colonel Liuzzi's book is
a soldier's appraisal of one of the worst atrocities committed by the Wehrmacht
in the European theatre of conflict in the Second World War.
This moving work catalogues the annihilation of the Acqui Division on Kefalonia in
September 1943 and is an emotional tribute to those men.
5.0 out of 5 stars. A tragic tale, well told. ByU4ea708on 21 August 2016 Format: Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase We visit Kefalonia every year, sometimes twice. Over the years if picked up some of the information about the events described in this book, but this gives so much more, and much of it is first hand. I've visited some of the sites described and now I have the information to visit more. My thanks to the author and his translator for the detail they have given us about this tragic, criminal episode. Comment|One person found this helpful. Having been made aware of the brutal events by Louis De Bernieres, I foolishly believed to know the essence of what occurred in this paradise. However, on discovering this book, my whole impression of Kefalonia has now been blown away to be replaced by a vivid new understanding. What a fantastic eye-opener. The true repulsive happenings on this particular island, focusing on one week in September 1943 after the Italian surrender are not only highlighted, but brought heart-achingly to life by eye witness accounts. The author travels around the island seeking the places where the atrocities occurred, speaks to the locals who still remember those deadly times, and in depth, takes us along with him. I stay pretty much in the heart of the area where the majority of the executions took place, and to know now exactly what occurred on this lane or that, on this beach, at this house, in this olive grove, has changed my perception for ever. I have since begun my own travels in the author's footsteps. This island has altered my life for the better (for personal reasons back in 2010) and now this book has changed my island - morbidly, but for the better. The Acqui Division must be remembered, and this book will enable its readers to do just that. Highly recommended. Comment|3 people found this helpful. ByMrs Mavis Davisonon 9 March 2015 Format: Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase I read this after watching a film about the Italians treatment by the Germans during the war. This book enlightened me quite a lot. I will be interested in reading more on the same subject. Comment|Was this review helpful to you?YesNoReport abuse
